Richmond Paddle Boarding Event – 21st June 2018

Get On Board
Stop Plastic Polluting Our River

Stand Up Paddle Board Event
Kew Bridge to Richmond – Thursday 21st June

Get on board with Be Richmond on Thursday 21st June 2018 and take part in our inaugural stand up paddle board event from Kew Bridge to Richmond. The event, which aims to highlight the problem of plastic pollution along the river and which will involve collection of plastic along the way, will culminate in a massed gathering of boarders at Richmond.

Be Richmond Chairman Erick Kervaon said:

“Richmond’s beautiful riverside setting is one of the town’s greatest assets. A healthy river is important to everyone who lives in, works in and visits Richmond. Our stand-up paddle board event on 21 June will highlight the problem of plastic pollution and be great fun for participants and spectators alike.”

Anyone can take part, subject to completing a training session with our partners, Active 360. We are offering very special discounted rates to the first 50 applicants on a first-come-first-served basis.

Event Details and Route

Date:          21 June 2018
Time:          4.30 pm – 7.30 pm (tbc depending on the tide)
Start:          Kew Bridge
Finish:        River Lane, Petersham, Richmond

Entry fee:   £25 for first 50 applicants (includes a 2-hour SUP training session before the event).

The route passes some of South West London’s most iconic sites including; Kew Gardens, Syon House, Isleworth Ait, Old Deer Park and of course, the stunning Richmond Riverside.

We will be collecting plastic litter – both on and off the water – along the route. Paddlers will arrive in Richmond together getting off the water at River Lane, Petersham, Richmond.

Never Paddled Before?

Don’t worry, this event is open to all abilities because we’ve included a 2-hour SUP training session in the entry fee with our partners Active360, who are at the forefront of developing environmentally friendly SUP in London.

Booking & Early Bird Entry Fee

The first 50 people to register will be offered a price of £25. This is on a first-come-first-served basis and includes both the entry fee and a 2-hour SUP training session with Active360. See How to Book below to secure your spot today!

To be able to attend the event, you must complete the 2-hour training session.

How to Book

For the first 50 entries, booking the training session automatically grants you a place in the Get on Board event on June 21.

Create a user account in the Active360 online booking system. Go to the calendar, click ‘Sign in’ at the top right corner of the calendar screen and choose “Create new user account”. This will take you through to the consent form. After you receive the confirmation email, click on the link to verify the user account.

You are now ready to book your SUP training session. Look for any “Beginner” sessions in the calendar:

RICHMOND (THAMES) – 2 exclusive sessions on 30 May and 6 June, see below for details

KEW BRIDGE (THAMES) – sessions available every weekend and most Thursday evenings.

BRENTFORD LOCK (CANAL) – sessions available every Tuesday evening.

PADDINGTON BASIN (CANAL) – sessions available every weekend and most Wednesday evenings.

Locate a suitable session in the calendar and click on “New booking”. Your details should be auto-populated. Use discount code “Get Onboard” to get a 2-hour session for £25 (normal price £57). The special Richmond sessions also cost £25 and will last about 1 hour, but still give access to the event. A small extra fee applies if booking a 3-hour session. You are only allowed to use the discount code once per person.

After booking, you will receive a confirmation email with all the details you need to attend the training session. You’ll also receive an email verifying your place in the Get on Board with Be Richmond event on 21 June 2018.

We’re pleased to announce two exclusives 1 hour practice sessions right here in Richmond:

• Wednesday, 30 May, 2018 at 6pm-7pm (12 places)
 Wednesday, 6 June, 2018 at 6pm-7pm (12 places)

The Richmond training sessions, which are available on a first-come-first-served basis, will include a safety brief, some on-land paddle instruction and getting onto the river to SUP, starting kneeling down and progressing to paddling standing up.

What should I bring for the training session?

Wear some technical, light clothing (not cotton or jeans) and always bring extra warm layers if necessary. You’re welcome to borrow a wetsuit, just e-mail Active360 with your rough height and size before the session. Active360 require you to have footwear while paddling. An old pair of trainers, you don’t mind getting wet is fine, or wet shoes if you have some.

You should also bring a towel and a spare change of clothing, just in case. On most trips, there is an option to stop for a quick drink or snack, so bring some spare change if you’d like to buy something.

If you purchase a phone case, neoprene socks, boots or gloves from the Active360 online store, let us know in advance, so that they can be collected before your session.

What time do I need to arrive for my SUP session?

You’ll need to arrive at least 15 minutes before your session’s start time to get changed. Unfortunately, late-comers cannot be accommodated. If you have not attended the safety briefing, you will not be allowed on the water.

I made the booking for my friends, now what?

If you’ve booked for multiple people, then please have them create user accounts in the Active360 system. This saves time on the day, so they don’t have to fill out paperwork and they’re in the system for discounted rates on future group trips.

Can under-18s come along?

Sorry, the inaugural event is for adults only.

I know how to SUP; do I still need to complete the training session?

Conditions on the River Thames are very unique, so why not take advantage of the 2-hour SUP training session included in the price? If you’ve paddled with Active360 before, please apply the event discount code “Get Onboard” on one returning paddlers’ session to secure your spot in the event.

How hard is SUP?

It’s a brilliant body workout, and you’ll certainly feel it the day after – in a good way, but as we use the tides/sheltered water, your physical ability on a beginner’s session shouldn’t be something to worry about. You do need to be able to kneel and rise to a standing position. When booking please let Active360 know if you have any medical condition(s) that they should be aware of.

How far will we get on the training session?

We will always aim to reach the advertised destination, but sometimes variations in conditions and ability of the group will mean that we will have to turn early. But don’t worry, we have plenty of alternative places to stop along the way, and it won’t affect your paddling time.

Is the water clean?

The Thames is currently one of the cleanest rivers running through a major city in the world and is recognised as a massive environmental success story. It currently boasts about 325 species in its tidal stretches, including; cormorants, herons, seals and salmon, some of which you’ll be sure to see on your trip. You’ll also find lots of people using the river for recreational activities, especially rowing and kayaking. The canals in London support a more modest number of species and are also used for recreational activities.

As a precaution for paddling in any open water, open cuts should be covered with plasters and tape, and you should wash your hands with soap/antibacterial gel before eating any food. Take a shower if you fall in.

How likely am I to fall in?

Not very likely – but there’s a small chance. Active360 coaches will teach you techniques to help you feel more stable and return to kneeling if you need a break from standing. If you do fall in, there are showering facilities which can be used.

Could my training session be cancelled by Active360?

Active360 occasionally cancel group trips with 24 hours’ notice if they do not have the minimum number participants to run the session (this is rare between spring – autumn). They will also cancel, if they deem conditions to be unsuitable (e.g. very strong winds, fast fluvial flows, etc.), but they are not put off by a bit of rain. If your session is cancelled, you will have an option to reschedule or obtain a full refund. If you’d like to cancel or rearrange your session you must inform Active360 48 hours beforehand.

I loved the session (hopefully), what’s next?

You can join further training sessions as a “returning paddler”. The discount code will no longer apply, and session prices vary from £22 to £24.

Still have a question?

Get in touch with our partner Active360 by email or by calling 020 3393 5360. They’ll be happy to answer your questions.

We look forward to seeing you on 21 June for what promises to be a great event!
